Bordesley Park Magic with  Owen Strickland was at the venue twice in one weekend in August for two fabulous weddings.

First up it was Kareen and Gav, who had had to postpone a number of times due to Covid. However the day finally arrived and it was amazing fun. They had booked me after seeing me at an open day at the venue a few years ago. They wanted to perform at the lull between the wedding breakfast and evening reception

This is a very popular package at Bordesley Park, as there’s no accommadation on site. It means the guests are milling about waiting for the DJ to start , so magic keeps them entertained.

The next wedding, just two days later it was Stuart and Ruth. They also had be booked for the same time.

Both wedding s were amazing fun, as can be seen from the photos. Talking of phots, the other coincidence of teh weekend was that the same photographer was at both weddings. It’s strange how this occasionally happens. These photos are amongst my favourite of the whole summer. The very talented photographer is Mark Horton. the quality of his work is very clear to see, and he was great with guests on the day. You can contact Mark on all the usual Social media channels, and his website is

Birmingham Magician Footballers Wedding at the stunning Wrenbury Hall.

Earlier in the packed Summer I was booked by professional footballer Samuel Ameobi for his wedding to Rachel.

It was the first big wedding after restrictions were relaxed after a long 18 months. There must have been 150 guests, which after the last year seemed like 1500!!

Firstly I dod mix and mingle magic around the two reception rooms of the beautiful Wrenbury Hall. The guests were amazing fun, and Rick Dell Photographer was there to capture some great images. The Rangers FC captain James Tavernier was there, and I have to say what a great bloke he was too. Theres some video footage of me performing to him and his friend, and it shows what a great laugh they were.

Secondly I then performed my social Bride and Groom Trick for Samuel and Rachel, which went down a treat as the photos show.

Finally it was into the wedding breakfast where I performed around the tables between courses. This was not before probably the best bridal party entrance Ive ever seen. The parents, Best man, Bridesmaids were all introduced in by an Emcee, and danced into the room, It was such a great spectacle!!

The tables we’re as much fun as they had been in the drinks reception, and again James Tavernier a great laugh. What a great start to a busy Summer!!

Another new venue for me today, Dodmoor House in Northants. And what a gorgeous venue it is!!

Lauren sadly had to postpone from 2020, but  had a lovely  intimate wedding of 30 guests.

It was a beautiful sunny day. Everyone was sat in the lovely Courtyard when I arrived. I was booked for the lull after the wedding breakfast,  and before the evening reception. So it was magic in the sunshine in the beautiful Courtyard. It was also the perfect setting for the Bride and Groom Trick, as you can see !!

They had originally also booked me to do 20 mins stand up magic. However Lauren and I recognised everyone was having a great time sat in the sun, and more close up magic was the order of the day.

The remaining 2021 summer dates are nearing pretty much full. There are a few dates left , but they are going quickly. Similarly 2022 is now filling up very quick. At the time of writing I have 50 booked in for 2022, so please be quick 🙂

My second wedding back post lockdown was at a new venue for me, the beautiful Hyde House in The Cotswolds. It was gloriously sunny day for Katie and Karl, which added to the beauty of the day

I was booked to do mix and mingle magic for the “lull” between the wedding breakfast and the evening. It was meeting the bride and her mum at a Wedding fayre that got the booking. The couple has also booked for some stand up magic, but it was decided it was too hot to have guests back inside!

I was also booked as a surprise for Karl. Thus meant it was the first appearance of the year of the “clumsy duty manager”. It was a good laugh and Karl fell for it totally.

Outside it was lovely to mingle with the guests, and all were a great laugh. I did my Special Happy Couple tricks outside, and you can see the reaction they got. The wedding was captured by both White Stag Wedding Photography, and Stark Weddings Videography. Ill very much look forward to seeing their imagery in due course!

About The Awards

The Wedding Industry Awards is THE best awards there is in The Wedding Industry. Its the one that every supplier  wants to win.

To enter, it involves submitting a number of photos and videos of you performing at weddings in the past 12 months. You also have to answer a series of questions about your experiences over the last 12  months. Things like weddings done, trends etcetera. Then you ask Couples whose wedding you have performed at, to submit a review and a series of scores. These are then viewed by a set of judges who are experts in the industry.

This is the one of my lovely reviews that was read out on the night

Birmingham Magician Covid Wedding Package

Birmingham Magician Covid Wedding Package

Birmingham Magician Covid Wedding Package

I am now offering a Special Package for couples who are getting married during restrictions for Covid 19. Sadly, and weddings taking place at the moment are restricted to just 15 people, including the Happy Couple. However many couples are still going ahead with their Special Day, and why not!!

Ive had the privilege to perform at a number of these weddings this year, and each one has been amazing. Despite having numbers drastically reduced, they have been lovely intimate events that I will treasure for many years to come. This is a video of me performing at some recent Covid Restricted Weddings

So How Do I Perform for 15 Guests?

Firstly, the easy answer is, exactly the same as I do for a full wedding! However, where as mix and mingle magic usually takes a couple of hours to get round all the guests, with 15 it takes way less time. Therefore I just do 60 minutes mix and mingle magic. I say mix and mingle, but this could be at tables. Rues ad regulations are constantly changing, so I remain flexible for how I perform. As an example, for a recent Aston Marina Wedding, guests were stood up so it was ix and mingle in the traditional sense.

At Warwick House, however, guests were all seated at tables throughout, so it was table magic for this period. Either is fine with me!!

Do I Wear A Mask?

If required, absolutely! My first Cold wedding was before regulations changed,so that anyone indoors at venues should wear a mask when not seated. I offered the Bride and Groom when they booked that I’d be happy to wear one if they preferred. However they were happy for me not to wear one, and actually preferred it. On arrival I also checked with each table, who also said they would prefer no mask. So for that wedding, I didn’t wear one. For the subsequent weddings, the regulations had moved on so I did wear one. In a nutshell, I will always comply with Government regulations, and where I can, wishes of The Happy Couple/Guests

Social Distancing Magic/ Sanitising

I can offer Socially Distancing magic if required, where by none of the guests are required to touch any props etcetera. In the weddings I have done, this was not requested. Couples and guests have enjoyed some “normality” and have been keen to be involved/selecting cards etc. In this instance, I carry hand sanitiser around with me, so that anyone involved sanitises  before and after each trick.

Stand Up Magic

After the 60 minutes mix and mingle/table magic, I can do a stand up show that all the guests can watch. As (at the time of writing) DJ’s etc are still not allowed, its the perfect entertainment fir the guests. At some venues, guests will have been sat at their table all day, and boredom can certainly creep in. A 20-30 minute show can really lift the spirits ad provide some welcome entertainment.

Each show offers some light hearted magic with laughs and fun aplenty. The Happy Couple are also brought up to be starts of the show-its their day after all!! As my time at weddings currently is a lot less than would be usual, the price reflects this!! Get in touch to see how I can make your Covid wedding even better?

Owen Strickland performs for Andy and Sarah at Puckrup Hall in September. After an awful year for weddings,  on the back of Covid-19, it was finally time to perform at a wedding again.

Birmingham Magician at Puckrup Hall Birmingham Magician at Puckrup Hall Birmingham Magician at Puckrup Hall

I had never actually performed at Puckrup before, but what a lovely venue it is. As weddings are now capped at 30 guests, and not allowed DJ’s/dancing, Andy booked me for the evening. I was to perform an hour around the 5 tables and then do a short stand up session to the whole room.

It was slightly nerve wracking walking into the venue to be faced with everyone in masks. The venue is very well controlled when it comes to Covid guidelines. There was sanitiser everywhere and the staff were always on hand to monitor. But it felt secure whilst also welcoming, which was nice for both me and guests. Photographer Dale Stephens was on hand to capture the day.

It was wonderful to be finally performing again, and thankfully the guests were all amazing fun. Firstly I did an hour around the tables before doing a 20 minute stand up spot. This is a new feature Im offering for weddings, as it works well under the current guidelines. It involves a few tricks that play nicely to all the guests, similar to if they went to visit a show. It finished, of course, with getting Andy and Sarah up, as its their special day.

I had previously discussed with Andy about wether he wanted me to wear a mask/shield. He was open to me asking guests as I went around, which is what I did. Everyone had sanitiser before I performed and no one requested the mask. The result is some brilliant reaction photos as can be seen here.

How To Choose A Wedding Magician?

How To Choose A Wedding Magician?

How To Choose A Wedding Magician is not as easy as you’d think. Because, there’s so many, right?

Hopefully you’ve now decided to book a magician for your special day, and understand how much added value one can bring to your day. The easy answer to this, is make sure they’re great! But how do you that? Birmingham Magician Owen Strickland gives 10  handy tips to help you out.

1.  Try To Meet Them

If you can, you should absolutely try and meet ANY suppler that your going to have on your Special Day. This way you will get a feel for their personality, and that is so vital. This is even truer with magicians. Any professional magician should be happy to meet you, and show you some magic. Websites can make anyone look good, but can they match up to that in real life? I get the majority of my weddings from meeting couples at wedding fayres, where couples can meet me and see what I do for real. No camera tricks!!

Aston Marina Magician Owen Strickland

2. If You Can’t Meet them, Research them !

Are there videos/photos of the magician performing at weddings online? Does the magician actually do as many weddings as they say? It’s easy for suppliers to say, “we do X amount of weddings a year”, but is there evidence of that? If there isn’t, ask yourself why? Every wedding I perform at goes on my social media accounts. It’s therefore very easy to look back at say, 2019, and see all 70 weddings on there. My website has over 1000 photos of me performing at various weddings over the years.

3. Check Their Reviews

A big indicator of the quality of a magician is reviews. What have previous couples said about the magician? But how do you tell if it’s a real review? A sentence on a website, saying “He was amazing. Mr and Mrs W” could easily be made up. How do you know they even exist? How do you know that review wasn’t from 1994? Verified reviews are what they should have(preferably with dates and locations of weddings on)such as Google reviews, Trust Pilot etc. I have over 120 5 Star Google Reviews and over 340 5 star reviews via my verified “Best Of” page.

Birmingham Magician Owen Strickland

4. Are They Recommended by Venues?

Is the Magician recommended at any venues you know? When an established and respected venue recommends a supplier, its usually a good sign that they are both good and trustworthy. They will not stake their hard earned reputation on just anyone. I’m very humbled that a number of exclusive venues recommend me. Amongst such venues are Alrewas Hayes, Aston Marina, Hogarths Solihull, Moor Hall, Bordesley Park, Calderfields Golf and Country Club, The Limes Earlswood and Swinfen Hall.

5. What do They Cost ?

Cost is very subjective, and every wedding will be working to a “budget” of some sort. You probably already know how quickly the budget can get out of hand! Magicians vary greatly in cost, as does the quality. I’m probably in the mid to higher range of pricing (my packages are £450-£700). But with that comes the assurances that have been mentioned n the other paragraphs. If a price seems too good to be true, ask yourself why, and check the other 9 points in this article. A quick look at any of the “Wedding Scam” pages for suppliers will show that in every instance, its been a cheap supplier that’s caused the issue. My best advice would be, do not book a magician on price alone!

6. Are they Actually Entertaining?

As well as performing magic, your Wedding magician needs to be entertaining. He needs to be personable, be able to make your gusts feel relaxed and at ease. There is no use having a technically amazing magician, if he is as dull as dishwater. I know some magicians who are the best technical magicians in the country. However they would be no use at a wedding, as they’re not fun to be around or slightly entertaining. Hopefully my show reels will show you how I am at weddings. Its all about entertaining to keep your guests happy.

7. Insurance

A dirty word in many ways, but an important one!! The current Covid Pandemic has opened a whole can of worms when it comes to wedding insurance. If ever an event has shown how vital insurance is, it’s this one! Its vital that any supplier at you wedding has the relevant insurance. For magicians, it’s Public Liability Insurance. The majority of Venues will insist on it, and will not let a supplier on site without it. You don’t want to find out that your magician has been escorted off the premises, as he hasn’t got PLI! I have it with Equity, and covers me for £10 million. Thankfully, I have never had to use it!!

8. Have They Won Any Awards?

Has the Magician won awards? Actually , scratch that ! Nearly every Magician has “award winning” on their website!! But what is the Award? Its very easy to add “Award Winning”, without specifying what that Award was for. Do ask them what the awards they have won are, and when they won them. I’m very fortunate to have won The Wedding Industry Awards for Best Wedding Entertainer a number of times. TWIA is the leading awards in the Wedding Industry, where only Brides and Grooms whose wedding a supplier has attended, can vote. They all leave feedback and its independently judged

How to choose a wedding magician

9. Are They A Member of The Magic Circle?

This isn’t in itself vital, because I know some excellent magicians who are NOT Members Of The Magic Circle. I equally know some boring magicians that ARE!! However, you can certainly take some peace of mind that if a Magician IS a Member. He will have been through a rigorous application procedure of an interview, exam and audition in front of some of the best magicians in the country.Only those deemed good enough are admitted. Thankfully, I passed and I am a Member. In fact, I am the West Midlands Regional Representative for The Magic Circle!

How to choose a wedding magician

10. Are They Trustworthy?

A MASSIVE one, and good one to finish. For any couple, trustworthiness in suppliers  is vital. You are not only investing a significant amout of money with them, but also investing trust that they will make your day amazing. This is a huge responsibility, and one I take very seriously. Ensure you magician gives you a legal contract that covers your money and their terms&conditions. Also ensure they give you a full invoice, detailing what you have paid

With all the postponed weddings from 2020 through Covid 19, I have heard of some horror stories from my couples about some suppliers. Some have refused to move dates or refund, leaving couples short of a lot of money. During this Crisis, I have moved 99 per cent of weddings where I was available for no cost. I have kept the original price that was agreed, and where I have been able to fulfil new dates (through already being booked), I have refunded any deposit paid. My recent feedback from the poor couples who have had to postpone will bear testament to that.

So there we have it. How to choose a Wedding Magician in 10 hand steps!

Today, Warwick House Magician Owen Strickland was back at the fabulous Warwick House  today for Beth and Dale’s Special Day. The couple booked me at one of the open evenings at the venue that they hold throughout the year. These evening s are exclusive for couples who have already booked their wedding at this wonderful Warwickshire Venue. I am truly lucky to be the recommended magician at such a wonderful venue as Warwick House.

Beth and Dale booked to perform mix and mingle magic during the drinks reception. This is a great time to have me, as the two sides of the  wedding are just meeting, probably for the first time. Magic is a great ice breaker, and keeps the guest entertained whilst the all important photographs are being taken. The guests were all great fun, and the horrible rainy day made no difference to the atmosphere.

Then i performed my special tricks for Beth and Dale in the music room. I love this part of the day, as it always makes such a lovely photo.

How to Choose Wedding Entertainment

How to Choose Wedding Entertainment

I was asked by the folks at to write an article about what to look for when booking your wedding entertainment.This is what I wrote;

I perform at about 70 weddings a year, so I’m pretty experienced at this sort of thing. And over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two about booking wedding entertainers.

Firstly, make time to see the act you are going to book in person. Whether that’s at a wedding fair, or a gig they are performing at. I find – particularly with magicians – they can have an amazing website but in reality they’re not very experienced in person, which can often result in poor feedback from guests afterwards.

Ask how many weddings they’ve worked at, and if they’ve got any evidence. I’ve got photos and videos from over 300 weddings I’ve performed at over the past few years. If a magician can’t provide that, consider why that may be. You want to feel confident they are who they say they are, before parting with your money.

By meeting the magician, you’ll get a feel for their personality. It’s important that a magician is amiable and able to interact with your guests. There are many differing styles of magic and not all may suit your audience.

Once you’ve met them, start your research! What’s their online feedback like? Does it look like it’s genuine? Lots of anonymous quotes from friends does not mean they are good entertainers. I have over 350 five star reviews, and around 130 from brides and grooms who’ve voted for me the two times I’ve won  The Wedding Industry Awards.Im also the highest Google rated magician in The Midlands with over 100 5 star reviews

Make sure you Google the performer. If Google hasn’t heard of them, there’s probably a good reason why. If they state they are award-winning, ask them about the awards and if they have proof – or see if you can find proof. I’ve not personally seen a magician’s website that isn’t award-winning but few have details of what the award is. The same applies to the word international. Performing a trick for the barman on holiday does not make them an international magician!

Ask if they’re a member of The Magic Circle. It’s not the end of the world if they’re not, there are lots of amazing magicians who choose not to be, but it’s another layer of comfort about the act your booking.

Ensure you confirm that they have full Public Liability insurance. If they haven’t – avoid! God forbid they have an accident on your wedding day and they don’t have insurance. Make sure you get a contract that secures you both, and an invoice too. Most insurance companies require this now in any case.

Finally – don’t  go for the cheapest option. There may be a reason why they’re cheap. Have you ever bought Ryanair seats only to complain about the experience from the moment you arrive at the airport? Don’t have a Ryanair experience on the most important day of your life. You deserve the best, as do your guests.

A magician is perfect for a wedding as they can look after your guests when there’s a lull in proceedings. Whether it’s ice breaking magic during the photographer’s session or when you’re having your all-important couple photos. A magician can mix and mingle between two families and create fun, laughs and add to a great experience.

Table magic can also take place during the wedding breakfast. It’s difficult to sort a seating plan that keeps everyone happy, so a magician will provide an excellent opportunity for people who have not met, to engage with each other at the table. The lull between the breakfast and evening is also popular, as guests have nothing to do other than wait for the evening reception to start. Equally the evening reception is popular as the evening guests get to be involved which helps them settle in once they arrive.
